GTE Automatic Electric was a technology company that provided telecommunication solutions and services. It was founded in 1901 by Almon Strowger with a goal to revolutionize the then-existed switchboard operations and eliminate human operators, thereby improving efficiency and reducing errors. The company developed various advanced telephone switches, including the Panel Switch and the Step-By-Step Switch, which played a key role in the automation of the telephone network.
During World War II, GTE Automatic Electric supplied telephone equipment to the US government, allowing for secure and reliable communication channels among various military divisions. In the post-war years, the company continued to innovate, introducing the Electronic Switching System, which was a significant milestone in the evolution of telecommunications and led to the development of the modern-day phone system.
In 1955, GTE Automatic Electric was acquired by General Telephone & Electronics (GTE) Corporation, which added further expertise and resources to its operations. During the 1980s, GTE Automatic Electric became a leader in cellular telephony and developed various wireless technology solutions.
In 1990, the company was merged with Siemens AG, a German multinational engineering and technology company, forming Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. And in 2012, Nokia acquired Siemens Stromberg-Carlson’s stake and renamed it Nokia Siemens Networks. Currently, Nokia Networks operates as a leading communications technology company that provides solutions for both mobile and fixed network operators.
